Central North Island Report, May 2021
Entries open for Waiclay on 21 June 2021. This year’s selector is Melbourne based ceramic artist, Prue Venables. Waiclay is working within Covid restrictions but are optimistic that Prue will be able to travel. Additional events include a demonstration/workshop with the selector and Waiclay’s usual walk and talk followed by a forum discussion on 13 November. This month in Auckland the ASP volunteers are out in force with the help of Duncan Shearer to build a new wood kiln. ‘Making a Mark’ is an exhibition by Elena Renker at Public Record in Ponsonby featuring her signature bold and elegant wood fired vessels. Entries are now open for the 4th Annual Open Ceramics Art Awards, hosted by the Quarry Arts Centre. The Great Plate Annual Fundraiser for the Quarry Arts Centre is happening again this July. Around 100 artists support the fundraiser by contributing to design planes that are then put up for sale on Trademe. This year well-known fantasy author and television producer Neil Gaiman has designed plates while he is in New Zealand. The listings go up…

The Kilns at Te Horo : an update from The Mirek Smisek Arts Trust
Real progress has been made at the site of Mirek Smíšek’s historic beehive kilns at Te Horo, Kāpiti Coast. When the section of expressway between Peka Peka and Ōtaki was under planning consideration it was clear the new road would track directly through the land where ceramicist Mirek Smíšek lived, worked and taught. Quartz – the Museum of Studio Ceramics
The name Quartz may seem odd for a museum devoted to ceramics but for its owner Rick Rudd, it’s perfect.
