The master craftsman is seldom a household name. Neil was known and respected among older New Zealand potters but didn’t hit the headlights in the ‘arts’ media. He was an ‘old school’ ceramicist. Craftsman first and last. Always aspiring to emulate his own masters, most of them without a name in any history books, from Ancient China, more recent Japan, talented journeymen from Medieval England or France. We were all very saddened at the news of Neil Grant passing away in May. Neil was a founding member of this organisation, named then – New Zealand Potters, and a life member. He also contributed so much to ceramics education via The Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic. The beautiful book ‘Neil Grant Master Potter’ by Peter Stupples was published in 2021, and is a tribute to Neil’s passion and commitment to ceramics. Hawkes…
