Kilns at Te Horo Press Release Two significant beehive pottery kilns at Te Horo, on the Kapiti Coast, built by Mirek Smíšek, New Zealand’s first professional studio potter, between 1971 and 1973, have been listed in the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero as a Category 2 historic place. Ceramics NZ Life Member, Bruce Martin, passed away on the 21st of June 2023, at the grand age of 97. Unable to find vessels suitable for his wife, Estelle’s, ikebana arrangements in 1960’s Hastings, Bruce suggested they make their own. So began a 40 year partnership in pottery making.
