Our Touring Potter Programme with Carla Ruka was in Nelson during her second region visit for 2022. Our thanks to Marion Bansgrove, Karin Roehling, Rosie Gardiner and all the wonderful people at Craft Potters Nelson who looked after Carla on her workshop days there. Those that attended have passed on some very positive feedback on their experience and Carla’s wonderful teaching style. The free public artist talk at The Suter Art Gallery was also well attended. Currently on at The Suter Art Gallery from June 18, 2022 to October 2, 2022, Stevei Houkāmau: Ira Tangata Ira Atua. With her distinctive uku forms Stevei Houkāmau (Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-a-Apanui) reveals the metaphorical and literal connections between tāngata, uku and Pāpātuanuku. Characterised by their carved surfaces, Houkāmau’s works explore whakapapa through the revival and reinterpretation of traditions of her Tīpuna. For more information see The Suter Art Gallery

Nelson Clay Week opens this October, brought to you by The Arts Council Nelson, in association with Kiln Studio and with support from Creative New Zealand, Nelson Regional Development Agency and Nelson City Council. This is a new biannual festival celebrating contemporary ceramic art and showcasing the ever-growing talent of Aotearoa’s pottery community. Bringing together established and emerging potters, Nelson Clay Week aims to foster connection, promote skills sharing and encourage discussion about the past, present and future of this multi-faceted medium. This year’s event offers an extensive programme of workshops and masterclasses for practitioners and invites pottery lovers and the wider community to join in the celebration through a number of public activities and exhibitions across Nelson’s CBD and the Nelson Tasman region.
