Applications open for POTTERS RESIDENCY at The Kilns at Te Horo

Three residency terms: April/May/June 2026, July/August/September 2026, and October 2026-March 2027.

The Residency at The Kilns at Te Horo offers a ceramic artist a beautiful location to interpret Smíšek’s legacy connected to a vibrant artistic community. It is an essential element of The Mirek Smíšek’ Art Trust’s commitment to celebrate, educate and inspire. The programme began in October 2023, and has hosted five potters to date.

The residency takes place at The Kilns at Te Horo, where Mirek lived and worked in Te Horo. It is administrated by The Mirek Smisek Arts Trust who are also responsible for the now restored bee-hive kilns built by Mirek in the 70’s, the original native bush and surrounds that make up The Kilns at Te Horo. The resident will live on site in the newly renovated Te Horo Railway station – now a two bedroom home – and work in the Doreen Blumhardt Red Cottage Studio – both located next to the Bee-hive kilns. All costs are covered, other than clay/materials and fuel used for the gas and diesel salt/soda brick kiln.

Offered as a time for creative development and exploration, production of work and sharing knowledge and exhibiting work, the residency is for periods of three or six months. An independent selection panel will review applications where potters are asked to outline their experience and proposal for their time at The Kilns.
