Exploring Circular Ceramics in Bali

Louise Webster, a Christchurch-based design practitioner, lecturer, and ceramic artist, has been awarded a Prime Minister’s Scholarship to study Circular Ceramics at the renowned Kevala Ceramics studio in Bali. With a strong background in innovation and sustainable design, Louise is passionate about exploring new ways to create ceramics using industrial waste, reducing environmental impact while maintaining high-quality craftsmanship.
During her 10-week residency, Louise will be mentored by Sara Howard from Circular Ceramics, whose pioneering work in sustainability and circular manufacturing is reshaping the ceramics industry. Kevala Ceramics, known for its world-class hand-built ceramics, supplies bespoke tableware to luxury hotels, resorts, and restaurants worldwide. Through this experience, Louise will gain first-hand insight into circular ceramic practices, from material development to large-scale production.
Throughout her time in Bali, Louise will document her journey, sharing key learnings, behind-the-scenes insights, and cultural experiences. Follow her on Instagram (@louisewebsterceramics) for regular updates, including a dedicated “Bali” highlight showcasing her discoveries.
This opportunity marks an exciting step in the exploration of sustainable ceramic design and its potential applications in New Zealand. Stay tuned for more insights!
