Huge community woodfiring at The Quarry Arts Centre
In May the Whangārei Woodfiring Collective held the first community firing of the Quarry woodkiln in several years. The firing included the work of over 60 artists including Amorangi Hikuroa, Greg Barron, Mark Mitchell, Israel Dawson, Dorothy Waetford, Rosy and Rich and many others with over 650 pieces fired. The focus was on building woodfiring skills and included a workshop with Greg Barron as well as informal learning opportunities with more experienced woodfirers generously sharing information during the loading and firing. The next community firing is being planned for February 2024 and there is also a collaboration developing with the Quarry and Duncan Shearer to build a smaller wood kiln which can be fired more frequently.
