Otago Southland Update July 2024

We were all very saddened at the news of Neil Grant passing away in May.

Neil was a founding member of this organisation, named then – New Zealand Potters, and a life member. He also contributed so much to ceramics education via The Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic. The beautiful book ‘Neil Grant Master Potter’ by Peter Stupples was published in 2021, and is a tribute to Neil’s passion and commitment to ceramics.

Hawkes Bay artists Scott Brough and Yasmin Dubrau visited a few places around the motu in June.

Scott had a pop-up show at Midden in Portobello and The Pottery hosted a ‘Pottery Improvisation Workshop with Scott Brough’.

Yasmin’s exhibition Your mind is on holiday was held in Invercargill at The Art Attic.

The Otago Potters Group Soda Firers had an exhibition at Pea Sea Art in Port Chalmers.

Well made New Zealand – Temuka Pottery

Waitaki Museum, ลŒamaru

In almost every house across the country there resides an unassuming piece of crockery, stamped with โ€˜Temukawareโ€™. An unsung star of New Zealandโ€™s domestic pottery scene, unrealised in its significance, unappreciated in the art world, and only occasionally seen in museums. The Waitaki Museum | Te Whare Taoka o Waitaki holds one of the largest collections of Temuka Pottery in New Zealand, including rare and unique pieces whichย
it will be showing in this upcoming exhibition.ย
